AB419,1,4 1An Act to amend 119.04 (1); and to create 20.255 (2) (fh) and 115.413 of the
2statutes; relating to: professional development training in character
3education for teachers, principals, and school district administrators, granting
4rule-making authority, and making an appropriation.

This bill authorizes the Department of Public Instruction to award grants to
school districts for teachers, principals, and school district administrators to
participate in professional development trainings in character education. The bill
also requires DPI to count professional development training in character
development towards any professional development requirements for teacher or
administrator licensure.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:

AB419,2 1Section 2. 20.255 (2) (fh) of the statutes is created to read:
AB419,2,42 20.255 (2) (fh) Grants for character education professional development. The
3amounts in the schedule for grants for professional development in character
4education under s. 115.413.
AB419,3 5Section 3. 115.413 of the statutes is created to read:
AB419,2,10 6115.413 Professional development in character education; grant
7program.
(1) From the appropriation under s. 20.255 (2) (fh), the department may
8award grants to school districts for teachers, principals, and school district
9administrators to participate in professional development trainings in character
10education.
AB419,2,14 11(2) If a teacher, principal, or school district administrator is required to satisfy
12a professional development requirement for purposes of licensure under this
13chapter, the department shall count a professional development training in
14character education toward that requirement.
AB419,2,16 15(3) The department shall promulgate rules to implement and administer this
16section.

AB419,5 12Section 5 . Effective date.
AB419,3,1413 (1) This act takes effect on the day after publication, or on the 2nd day after
14publication of the 2017 biennial budget act, whichever is later.
