AJR65,1,53 Whereas, every day in the United States, approximately 300 people—including
465 children and teens—are injured or killed with guns in murders, assaults, suicides,
5and accidents; and
AJR65,1,86 Whereas, in Wisconsin, approximately 500 men, women, and children are
7killed with guns each year, including the 75 percent who die as a result of suicide;
8and
AJR65,1,109 Whereas, in Wisconsin, in 2014, there were 742 firearm injury-related
10emergency department visits; and
AJR65,1,1211 Whereas, there have been at least 205 school shootings in the United States
12since 2013—an average of nearly one a week; and
AJR65,1,1513 Whereas, gun deaths devastate families in urban, rural, and suburban areas,
14while Wisconsin's urban areas are disproportionately impacted by homicides and the
15state's less populated areas experience greater rates of gun suicide; and

1Whereas, gun violence costs our country $229 billion in combined direct and
2indirect expenses annually; and
AJR65,2,43 Whereas, studies show that gun safety laws save lives and are associated with
4lower firearm death rates; and
AJR65,2,85 Whereas, the U.S. Supreme Court has recognized that the Second Amendment
6allows for reasonable restrictions on firearms, including who can have them and
7under what conditions, where they can be carried, and what types of firearms are
8permissible; now, therefore, be it
AJR65,2,10 9Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature
10hereby proclaims June 2, 2017, as Gun Violence Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
