AJR66,1,43 Whereas, Canada celebrates its sesquicentennial of confederation on July 1,
42017, and throughout the year; and
AJR66,1,65 Whereas, the Founders of Confederation fulfilled their decades-long vision of
6a unified confederal nation consisting of the former British Americas; and
AJR66,1,97 Whereas, Sir John A. MacDonald, the leading statesman of Canadian
8Confederation, steered the Canadian ship of state from its founding days, serving
9several terms as Prime Minister until passing in office in 1891; and
AJR66,1,1110 Whereas, the Canadian nation rapidly grew in the 1870s, powered by
11transcontinental rail from the Atlantic to Pacific Oceans; and
AJR66,1,1512 Whereas, Canada is the most steadfast ally of the United States, two nations
13standing shoulder to shoulder, thereby successfully defending democracy and
14freedom in both World War I and World War II, and to this day as a partner in the
15North American Treaty Organization; and

1Whereas, Canada's commitment to international economic development and
2human rights advocacy is a beacon to all nations; and
AJR66,2,43 Whereas, Wisconsin's $7.3 billion annual trade relationship with Canada
4creates a $1.8 billion trade surplus to Wisconsin's economy; and
AJR66,2,75 Whereas, Wisconsin's beverage, dairy, forestry, organic chemicals, motor
6vehicle parts, plastics, and other industries benefit invaluably from trade with
7Canada; and
AJR66,2,108 Whereas, major businesses including SC Johnson, Bombardier,
9Harley-Davidson, Johnson Controls, and many others create family-supporting
10jobs for workers in both Canada and Wisconsin; and
AJR66,2,1311 Whereas, Canada and the United States jointly share stewardship of the Great
12Lakes, the world's largest group of freshwater lakes, comprising 21 percent of the
13world's fresh surface water; and
AJR66,2,1614 Whereas, the Institute of Public Administration of Canada, Canada 150!, and
15the Alliance 150 have intensively planned celebrations of architectural, cultural,
16scientific, and sporting achievements of Canadians; and
AJR66,2,1917 Whereas, the Canada Council for the Arts and the Social Sciences and
18Humanities Research Council provided critical support for the sesquicentennial
19from Canada's artistic and educational institutions; and
AJR66,2,2120 Whereas, the contributions of Canada's First Nations are essential to the origin
21and future of Canada; and
AJR66,2,2322 Whereas, Charles, Prince of Wales, will tour Canada in July for this celebration
23on behalf of Her Majesty's Government; now, therefore, be it
AJR66,3,2 24Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
25Wisconsin State Legislature commemorate the sesquicentennial (150th

1Anniversary) of Canada, acknowledging Canada's extraordinary friendship with the
2state of Wisconsin.
