This bill allows a person who is suing for recovery of damages for injury to, loss
of, or death of a domestic animal to recover the actual damages, including medical
bills and travel costs, in addition to any other remedies allowed by law.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB254,1 3Section 1. 895.4455 of the statutes is created to read:
SB254,1,7 4895.4455 Recovery for injury, loss, or death of animal. (1) Definition.
5In this section, “domestic animal” means a dog, cat, or other animal that is
6domesticated and kept as a household pet, but does not include a farm animal, as
7defined in s. 951.01 (3).
SB254,2,3 8(2) Damages. In an action for recovery of damages for injury, loss, or death of
9a domestic animal, including damages under s. 174.02 (1), a plaintiff who prevails

1in the action may recover actual damages, including medical bills and travel costs,
2for the injury, loss, or death of the domestic animal in addition to any other remedies
3available under law.
