SJR12,1,42 Whereas, John Herschel Glenn Jr. led a full life, devoted to his family, friends,
3state, and country, including serving four terms as a member of the United States
4Senate; and
SJR12,1,65 Whereas, John was born on July 18, 1921, in Cambridge, Ohio, and earned an
6engineering degree from Muskingum College; and
SJR12,1,87 Whereas, John served honorably in the United States Marine Corps from 1943
8to 1965 defending our country during World War II and the Korean conflict; and
SJR12,1,109 Whereas, John married his loving wife, Annie (Castor) Glenn in 1943, raising
10two children together during their marriage of more than 73 years; and
SJR12,1,1211 Whereas, John set a speed record as an airplane test pilot in 1957 by flying from
12Los Angeles to New York in under three and a half hours; and
SJR12,2,213 Whereas, John was selected by NASA to join the original group of astronauts
14named the Mercury Seven, which eventually led him to become the first American

1to orbit the Earth during his exploration on the Friendship 7 on February 20, 1962;

SJR12,2,43 Whereas, John earned the title of colonel in the United States Marine Corps
4and retired from service in 1965; and
SJR12,2,65 Whereas, John turned to public service by representing the state of Ohio in the
6United States Senate between 1974 and 1999; and
SJR12,2,87 Whereas, John went back to space in 1998 aboard the space shuttle Discovery,
8making him the oldest person to fly in space; and
SJR12,2,129 Whereas, John received numerous awards for his service such as the NASA
10Distinguished Service Medal in 1962, the Congressional Gold Medal in 2011, the
11Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama in 2012, and six
12Distinguished Flying Cross awards along with many others; and
SJR12,2,1613 Whereas, John passed away on December 8, 2016, surrounded by his loving
14family, leaving behind his wife, Annie, his daughter Carolyn and son John, and two
15grandchildren, as well as a legacy of space exploration and service to others; now,
16therefore, be it
SJR12,2,20 17Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the
18Wisconsin legislature join all Wisconsin residents in honoring the life and
19achievements of John Herschel Glenn Jr. and extend their condolences to his family
20and friends; and, be it further
SJR12,2,23 21Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
22resolution to John's wife, Annie, and to his children Carolyn Ann Glenn and John
23David Glenn.
