SJR5,1,73 Whereas, established by the National Speech & Debate Association, in
4conjunction with national and local partners, this event, on March 3, 2017, serves to
5promote better instruction in speech and debate across all grade levels and to
6highlight the pivotal roles these abilities play in personal advocacy, social
7movements, and public policy making; and
SJR5,1,108 Whereas, speech and debate education helps students develop important skills
9in communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration through the
10practice of public speaking; and
SJR5,1,1311 Whereas, participants in speech and debate activities learn not only to analyze
12and express complex ideas effectively but also to listen, concur, question, or dissent
13with reason and compassion; and
SJR5,2,214 Whereas, across the United States, countless educators devote in-school,
15after-school, and weekend time to supporting their students in speech and debate

1practices and competitions, and the example of hard work and dedication they set
2has a lasting, positive impact on their pupils; and
SJR5,2,43 Whereas, the skills learned through speech and debate activities serve
4students well throughout their lives; and
SJR5,2,75 Whereas, this occasion, on March 3, 2017, presents a welcome opportunity to
6recognize such instruction as an essential component of a well-rounded curriculum;
7now, therefore, be it
SJR5,2,10 8Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That: the members of
9the Wisconsin legislature hereby recognize March 3, 2017, as National Speech and
10Debate Education Day in Wisconsin; and, be it further
SJR5,2,12 11Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this resolution to
12the National Speech & Debate Association.
