2001 Senate JOINT RESOLUTION 33

SJR33,1,1 Relating to: the life and public service of Charles F. Smith III.

SJR33,1,3 Whereas, Charles F. Smith III was born on July 16, 1918, in Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and died on April 17, 2001, in Wausau; and

SJR33,1,6 Whereas, he graduated from Wausau High School in 1935 and earned a B.A. degree in 1941 and an LL.B. degree in 1948 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and

SJR33,1,8 Whereas, during World War II, Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army, where he was a first lieutenant, and fought in the Pacific Theater; and

SJR33,1,10 Whereas, Charles Smith married Joan Sampson on February 8, 1948, in Wausau and, subsequently, Joan preceded Charles in death on July 26, 1995; and

SJR33,1,12 Whereas, Charles was elected to the Wisconsin senate in 1962 and served in the 1963 and 1965 legislative sessions; and

SJR33,1,14 Whereas, during his tenure in the senate, Charles served as majority caucus secretary in 1963 and majority caucus chairman in 1965; and

SJR33,2,3 Whereas, prior to his tenure in the senate, Mr. Smith served as an alderman for 10 years on the Wausau City Council and served as a supervisor for 10 years on the Marathon County Board (serving 2 years as its chairman); and

SJR33,2,5 Whereas, Mr. Smith was chairman of the Marathon County Republican Party for many years; and

SJR33,2,8 Whereas, Mr. Smith was a member of the Wausau Rotary Club and served as its president, and he also served as chairman of the Marathon County Bar Association; now, therefore, be it

SJR33,2,12 Resolved by the senate senate assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Charles F. Smith III contributed to this state and his community, express their sorrow at his death, and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further

SJR33,2,17 Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Mr. Smith's sister, Elizabeth J. Smith of Wausau, Wisconsin; to his 2 daughters, Nancy Lampman of Tampa, Florida, and Kathy Martin of Meridan, Mississippi; and to his 2 sons, Charles F. Smith IV of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and Richard Smith of Minneapolis, Minnesota.
