AJR115,1,53Whereas, Intersex Awareness Day is recognized on October 26 in honor of the 4first public demonstration by intersex people in the United States at the annual 5conference of the American Academy of Pediatrics on October 26, 1996; and AJR115,1,86Whereas, “intersex” refers to individuals born with variations in their physical 7or biological sex characteristics, including genital anatomy, reproductive organs, 8hormonal variations, or chromosomal patterns; and AJR115,1,119Whereas, since the first Intersex Awareness Day in 1996, it has become a day 10during which intersex people and allies come together to celebrate and uplift the 11intersex community; and AJR115,1,1312Whereas, approximately 1.7 percent of people are born with intersex traits; 13and AJR115,2,2
1Whereas, intersex people are often stigmatized and subjected to 2discrimination; and AJR115,2,63Whereas, intersex babies and children are often subject to unnecessary and 4involuntary surgeries at a young age to make their bodies conform to traditional 5notions of what it means to be male or female, although these interventions may 6result in lasting physical and mental harm; and AJR115,2,97Whereas, medical practices should respect the human rights and bodily 8autonomy of all people, and government institutions should implement policies that 9protect and support intersex people; and AJR115,2,1210Whereas, people born with intersex traits are an important part of the 11diversity of our state and should be afforded equal dignity and respect; now, 12therefore, be it AJR115,2,1513Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin 14Legislature does hereby recognize October 26 in 2025 and 2026, to be Intersex 15Awareness Day in Wisconsin.
