AB557-SA5,1,1 At the locations indicated, amend the engrossed bill as follows:

AB557-SA5,1,3 1. Page 3, line 13: after the semicolon insert: "marking a certain bridge as the "Major Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge";".

AB557-SA5,1,4 2. Page 29, line 24: after that line insert:

AB557-SA5,1,5 " Section 55m. 84.1041 of the statutes is created to read:

AB557-SA5,1,12 84.1041 Major Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge. (1) The department shall, subject to sub. (2), mark the bridge across Lake Superior on USH 2 between the city of Superior in Douglas County and the city of Duluth in the state of Minnesota as the "Major Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge" in recognition and appreciation of the many military accomplishments of Major Richard I. Bong during World War II, including being awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1944 and being widely known as America's greatest war ace.

AB557-SA5,2,6 (2) Upon receipt of sufficient contributions from interested parties to cover the cost of erecting a sign on the end of the bridge in this state to clearly identify to motorists the marking of the bridge under this section, the department shall erect the sign. In cooperation with the applicable local municipalities and upon receipt of sufficient contributions from interested parties, the department may erect and maintain a permanent monument in close proximity to the bridge. If a permanent monument is to be erected, the department shall design the monument after consultation with the descendants of Major Bong. No state funds, other than from the receipt of contributions under this subsection, may be expended for the erection or maintenance of the monument or sign.".
