TO 1997 ASSEMBLY JOINT RESOLUTION 108

AJR108-ASA1,1,2 1Relating to: encouraging schools in Wisconsin to use and promote programs that
2teach firearm safety to children.
AJR108-ASA1,1,53 Whereas, teaching children to act safely around firearms is a critical step in the
4ongoing effort to reduce the number of firearm-related accidents among children;
5and
AJR108-ASA1,1,86 Whereas, it is the belief of the Wisconsin legislature that firearm safety
7training efforts are, to a major degree, responsible for a decline in gun-related
8accidents among children; and
AJR108-ASA1,1,129 Whereas, firearm safety programs can teach the fundamentals of firearm
10safety to children in an effective and enjoyable way, and can communicate lifesaving
11messages to them, such as the following: "If you see a gun: STOP! DON'T TOUCH.
12LEAVE THE AREA. TELL AN ADULT."; and
AJR108-ASA1,1,1413 Whereas, the legislature wants to encourage civic activism and volunteerism
14rather than impose new unfunded state mandates on local governments; and

1Whereas, the legislature encourages the state superintendent of public
2instruction to promote the use in our schools of firearm safety programs to help
3prevent firearm-related accidents among children; and
AJR108-ASA1,2,74 Whereas, the legislature encourages civic and community service
5organizations that are concerned about the safety and well-being of the children of
6our state to provide funding for using firearm safety programs in our schools; now,
7therefore, be it
AJR108-ASA1,2,10 8Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the
9Wisconsin legislature encourage the promotion and use of firearm safety programs
10in Wisconsin schools to help prevent firearms-related accidents; and, be it further
AJR108-ASA1,2,12 11Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint
12resolution to the state superintendent of public instruction.
