AB517-ASA1,1,3 1An Act to amend 165.825; and to create 29.024 (1m) of the statutes; relating
2to:
felony record searches with respect to persons applying for and being issued
3licenses that authorize hunting with firearms and providing a penalty.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB517-ASA1, s. 1 4Section 1. 29.024 (1m) of the statutes is created to read:
AB517-ASA1,1,75 29.024 (1m) Firearm restrictions. (a) In this subsection, "firearms hunting
6license" means a license issued under this chapter that authorizes hunting with a
7firearm, but does not include a Class A bear license or a wild turkey hunting license.
AB517-ASA1,1,128 (b) No person may apply for a firearms hunting license if the person is
9prohibited from possessing a firearm under s. 941.29 (1) (a) or (b). No person may
10hunt with a firearm under the authority of a Class A bear license or a wild turkey
11hunting license if the person is prohibited from possessing a firearm under s. 941.29
12(1) (a) or (b).

1(c) The department of natural resources may request that the department of
2justice conduct a felony record search with respect to any person who is issued a
3firearms hunting license.
AB517-ASA1,2,84 (d) The department of natural resources may request that the department of
5justice conduct a felony record search with respect to any person who is issued a Class
6A bear license or a wild turkey hunting license if the department of natural resources
7determines that the person has hunted with a firearm under the authority of either
8of these licenses.
AB517-ASA1,2,109 (e) The department of justice may not charge the department of natural
10resources fees for felony record searches conducted under par. (c) or (d).
AB517-ASA1,2,1611 (f) A person who violates par. (b) shall forfeit not more than $200, and the court
12shall order the revocation of any hunting approval issued to the person under this
13chapter. In addition, the court may prohibit the issuance of any hunting approval
14under this chapter to the person for a period of up to 3 years. The court shall also
15order the person to pay an amount sufficient to reimburse the department of justice
16for the cost of conducting any felony record search with respect to that person.
AB517-ASA1, s. 2 17Section 2. 165.825 of the statutes is amended to read:
AB517-ASA1,2,22 18165.825 Information link; department of health and family services
19other departments. The department of justice shall cooperate with the
20departments of natural resources, regulation and licensing, and health and family
21services in developing and maintaining a computer linkup to provide access to the
22information obtained from a criminal history search.

1(1) This act first applies to licenses that are applied for on the effective date of
