(3) (a) The department shall examine every applicant for the renewal
5of an operator's license once every 8 years. The department may institute a method
6of selecting the date of renewal so that such examination shall be required for each
7applicant for renewal of a license to gain a uniform rate of examinations. The
8examination shall consist of a test of eyesight. The department shall make
9provisions for giving such examinations at examining stations in each county to all
10applicants for an operator's license.
At least one examining station in each county
11shall be open for business on each Saturday and until at least 9 p.m. on at least one
12other day of each week. Examining stations in each county where any election is held
1shall be open for business until at least 9 p.m. on each weekday during the week of
2the election and the week immediately preceding the election and after the election
3until the deadline described in s. 6.97 (3) (b), and the department shall, during this
4period, provide priority service to applicants seeking identification for voting. The
5person to be examined shall appear at the examining station nearest the person's
6place of residence or at such time and place as the department designates in answer
7to an applicant's request. In lieu of examination, the applicant may present or mail
8to the department a report of examination of the applicant's eyesight by an
9ophthalmologist, optometrist
, or physician licensed to practice medicine. The report
10shall be based on an examination made not more than 3 months prior to the date it
11is submitted. The report shall be on a form furnished and in the form required by
12the department. The department shall decide whether, in each case, the eyesight
13reported is sufficient to meet the current eyesight standards.
