This bill prohibits a school board from requiring, as a condition of employment, that a teacher reside within the school district. The bill defines "teacher" as any person whose employment by a school district requires that he or she hold a license or permit issued by the state superintendent of public instruction.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:
Section 1. 111.70 (4) (m) 5. of the statutes is created to read:
111.70 (4) (m) 5. The prohibition in s. 118.205 against requiring teachers employed by a school board to reside within the school district.
Section 2. 118.205 of the statutes is created to read:
118.205 Residency requirements. (1) In this section, "teacher" means any person holding a license or permit issued by the state superintendent whose employment by a school district requires that he or she hold that license or permit.
(2) A school board may not require, as a condition of employment, that a teacher reside within the school district.
Section 9337. Initial applicability; Public Instruction.
(1) Residency requirement. The treatment of sections 111.70 (4) (m) 5. and 118.205 of the statutes first applies to teachers covered by a collective bargaining agreement that is in effect on the effective date of this subsection upon the expiration, extension, renewal, or modification of the agreement.
