ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Cletus Vanderperren.
Whereas, Cletus Vanderperren was born on March 4, 1912, in the town of Pittsfield and died on September 28, 1994, in Green Bay; and
Whereas, he served on the Pittsfield Town Board for 30 years and was its chairperson for most of that time, and he served for 16 years on the Brown County Board; and
Whereas, he was first elected to the assembly in 1958 and served in that body for 34 years, a tenure that coincided with that of 8 governors and was the longest in the history of the assembly; and
Whereas, his public service won him dozens of honors, and a residence hall at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and a street in Ashwaubenon were named for him; and
Whereas, he was instrumental in the creation of Heritage Hill State Park, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay and the Northeast Wisconsin Technical College; and
Whereas, he is best known for the effect that, as the long-time chairperson of the assembly highways committee, he had on the state transportation system, making it safer, more convenient, more conducive to economic growth and more attractive to tourists; and
Whereas, the combination of his political instincts, his devotion to his district, his common sense, his affability, his genuine affection for others, his hard work and his integrity made him a highly respected and effective legislator, as evidenced by the fact that during the 1989-90 session he led all of the members of the assembly in getting bills enacted; and
Whereas, his devotion to his duty and to public service caused him to persevere despite a number of serious health problems; and
Whereas, Cletus Vanderperren was an exemplary legislator and an exemplary human being; now, therefore be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the legislature of the state of Wisconsin express their appreciation for and amazement at Cletus Vanderperren's remarkable record of public service, express their deep sorrow at his death and extend their condolences to his family, his friends and the thousands of constituents that he served so well; and, be it further
Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Cletus Vanderperren's wife, Cora, and to his children; Carlene Kurowski, Gloria Vanderperren and Carol Woodke.
