1995 Senate Joint Resolution 36
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Donald Hanaway.
Whereas, Donald Hanaway was born on December 25, 1933, in Stevens Point and died on September 7, 1995, in Green Bay; and
Whereas, he graduated from Madison Edgewood High School and earned a bachelor's degree and a law degree at the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and
Whereas, he served in the United States Army from 1954 to 1956; and
Whereas, he was a Brown County assistant district attorney, De Pere city attorney and mayor of De Pere; and
Whereas, he was elected to the Wisconsin senate during July 1979 and was reelected during 1980 and 1984; and
Whereas, during his 7 years in the senate he served with dignity and distinction, demonstrating a broad knowledge of all types of public policy issues, elevating the art of public debate to new highs and conducting himself as a true statesman; and
Whereas, he was elected attorney general during 1986 and served 4 years in this position, during which time he aggressively enforced the state's laws while fairly negotiating difficult issues and pursuing innovative solutions to criminal justice problems; and
Whereas, during 1991 he assumed the duties of a circuit court judge in Brown County, in which position he ruled fairly and knowledgeably on the cases before him; and
Whereas, Mr. Hanaway was very active in civic organizations, such as the De Pere Historical Society, the De Pere Chamber of Commerce, the Brown County Legal Aid Society and the De Pere Babe Ruth Baseball League; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the legislature of the state of Wisconsin express their appreciation for the many decades of devoted and effective public service that Donald Hanaway gave to the people of this state, express their sorrow at his death and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Mr. Hanaway's wife, Jo Ann, and to his children: Dr. Patrick Hanaway, Mary Kathleen Lingeman, Dr. Michael Hanaway and Maureen Carlson.
