1997 Assembly Joint Resolution 32
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of John Lyons Doyne.
Whereas, John Lyons Doyne was born on March 13, 1912, in Chicago, to Mae and James Doyne; and
Whereas, while he was growing up he spent his summers in Milwaukee, living with his grandfather and his uncle “Mike" Lyons, who would become his idol and political mentor; and
Whereas, John Doyne received his bachelor's degree in business administration and a law degree from Marquette University; and
Whereas, he was elected as a democrat to the state assembly in his first try for public office in 1940, declining a military deferment to enlist in the navy in 1942, serving his country during World War II for 42 months, mainly in the South Pacific; and
Whereas, his political life included serving as deputy treasurer of Milwaukee County in 1953 and 1954, as county supervisor from 1954 to 1960 and as acting chairman and chairman of the Milwaukee County Board from 1958 to 1960; and
Whereas, he was elected Milwaukee County's first county executive in 1960 and was reelected for 3 terms, retiring in 1976; and
Whereas, John Doyne always attracted attention as an easygoing man with a quick Irish wit, a broad smile and an infectious sense of humor; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature express extreme sadness at the passing of John Lyons Doyne on January 29, 1997, and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further
Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to his wife, Jacqueline, and his children; John Doyne, Jr., William Doyne, Patricia Heinemann and Mary Doyne.
