1997 Assembly Joint Resolution 68
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Tom Melvin.
Whereas, Tom Melvin was born on July 10, 1937, in Hurley and died on July 30, 1997, in Madison; and
Whereas, Tom graduated from Superior Cathedral High School, attended Beloit College and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and
Whereas, he worked for the assembly from January 13, 1965, until his retirement on January 31, 1995; and
Whereas, Tom became the assistant chief clerk of the assembly in 1967 and served in that position for 20 years, under 8 chief clerks; and
Whereas, he was elected assembly chief clerk in January 1987; and
Whereas, he was one of the founders of the American Society of Legislative Clerks and Secretaries and remained active in that organization; and
Whereas, he was a volunteer at the Madison Area Literacy Council, was a member of the board of Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children and worked at the Atwood Area Community Food Pantry; and
Whereas, his understanding of the workings of legislative bodies and his willingness to share that understanding with others greatly facilitated the operation of the assembly; and
Whereas, Tom was both an effective and invaluable worker and, due to his wit and geniality, a delightful colleague and friend; and
Whereas, as one of his legion of friends said, "everyone who knew Tom liked him, and everyone who knew him well loved him"; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature express their gratitude for the countless ways in which Tom Melvin aided them and in which he made the assembly better and more pleasant, express their sorrow at his death and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and be it further
Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Tom Melvin's brother, Stuart, and to his sister, Maggie.
