1997 Assembly Joint Resolution 87
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: declaring April 6 Tartan Day.
Whereas, on April 6, 1320, the Scots declared their independence; and
Whereas, that declaration included the noble words "we fight not for glory, nor riches, nor honours, but for freedom alone"; and
Whereas, April 6 is beginning to be recognized as Tartan Day, a day to celebrate not only that declaration but also the contributions that persons of Scottish descent have made to this country; and
Whereas, among those contributions are helping to form this country, as evidence by the fact that nearly half of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were of Scottish descent; and
Whereas, Neil Armstrong, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Alva Edison, Katherine Hepburn, Edgar Allen Poe and James McNeil Whistler are among the many notable Scottish-Americans; and
Whereas, one acting governor of this state, Arthur MacArthur, and one governor, William Smith, were born in Scotland; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature declare April 6 "Tartan Day", urge the people of this state to recognize the significance of that date and to celebrate it and express their appreciation for the contributions that Scottish-Americans have made to this state and nation.
