ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: proclaiming the Sheboygan double bratwurst on a hard roll, with the works, an integral part of Wisconsin's rich German heritage.
Whereas, Wisconsin has a unique cultural heritage comprised of numerous ethnic groups, with Germans being predominant; and
Whereas, the history of the bratwurst in Wisconsin is tied to the self-sufficiency and inventiveness of the German immigrants, their farm summer kitchens and village meat markets; and
Whereas, the manufacture of the Sheboygan bratwurst continues to be a source of pride in workmanship, with individual recipes handed down from generation to generation, and has grown to provide employment for over 1,000 people in the areas of manufacturing, marketing and sales in Sheboygan County; and
Whereas, over 2,000,000 people within the past 44 years have celebrated the bratwurst in Wisconsin at the annual Bratwurst Day Festival in Sheboygan and for over 30 years hundreds of state legislators, agency heads and staffers have enjoyed the delicious brats and "gemuetlichkeit" of the biennial Brat Day in Madison; and
Whereas, approximately 70% of all residences in the United States have outdoor grills, and the bratwurst and Sheboygan "brat fry" are synonymous with grilling, picnics and traditional family fun in Wisconsin; and
Whereas, promotion of this unique sausage encourages and stimulates Wisconsin's 3rd largest industry, tourism; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the flavorful, delicious Sheboygan double bratwurst on a hard roll, with the works, referred to as a "lunch" in the Sheboygan area, is declared the ultimate state sandwich and that citizens of Wisconsin and other states are invited and encouraged to experience and enjoy this culinary, ethnic delight.
