1997 Senate Joint Resolution 22
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: naming a Seawolf submarine the "Manitowoc".
Whereas, in 2000, construction of the U.S. navy's third, and last, Seawolf class submarine will be completed; and
Whereas, that submarine will be the U.S. navy's largest attack submarine; and
Whereas, that submarine has not yet been named; and
Whereas, during World War II 28 submarines were built at Manitowoc; and
Whereas, those submarines sank 132 enemy ships, and one of them, the "Rasher", sank 18 enemy ships; and
Whereas, 4 submarines that were built at Manitowoc were sunk in action; and
Whereas, as we approach Wisconsin's sesquicentennial year it is appropriate to recognize Manitowoc's contributions to this country's efforts during World War II, which have yet to be acknowledged, and to commemorate Manitowoc's shipbuilders of that era; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature suggest that the final Seawolf submarine be named the "Manitowoc", which means "Home of the Great Spirits", in order to recognize that city's significant submarine-building heritage; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Governor Thompson, to each member of this state's congressional delegation and to the Secretary of the Navy.
