ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: proclaiming Statehood Day Weekend.
Whereas, on August 6, 1846, Congress gave authorization to the people of the Territory of Wisconsin to form a constitution and state government for the purpose of being admitted to the Union; and
Whereas, after almost 2 years and 2 state constitutional conventions, the people of the Territory of Wisconsin ratified the constitution that we follow today; and
Whereas, on May 29, 1848, with a swift pen stroke, President James K. Polk welcomed Wisconsin as the 30th state; and
Whereas, Wisconsin still exists under the principles it was founded upon: those of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; and
Whereas, on May 29, 1998, Wisconsin will celebrate its 150th year of statehood, representing 150 years of growth and prosperity for its people; and
Whereas, the celebration of our state's Sesquicentennial is a once-in-a-lifetime event that will be remembered by all citizens, young and old, who continue the legacy of the State of Wisconsin and its founding principles; and
Whereas, the State of Wisconsin calls upon its towns, villages, cities and counties to share in the celebration of the Sesquicentennial on May 29, 1998; and
Whereas, the members of the Wisconsin legislature congratulate the State of Wisconsin on its upcoming 150th anniversary of statehood; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the weekend of May 29 to May 31, 1998, is proclaimed "Statehood Day Weekend" in Wisconsin for all citizens to celebrate the Sesquicentennial.
