1997 Senate Joint Resolution 48
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: honoring Jerry Madison upon his retirement.
Whereas, Jerry Madison retired on March 27, 1998, as home secretary for 7th District Congressman David Obey after 25 years of service; and
Whereas, he was born in Marshfield in 1935 and started his political life a mere 13 years later distributing literature for President Harry Truman; and
Whereas, Jerry Madison taught high school in both New London and Wausau, where he earned the Outstanding Young Educator Award, the State Outstanding Young Educator Award and the Friend of Education Award; and
Whereas, Madison served as Chair of the Wisconsin Higher Educational Aids Board, where he received an award from the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities for outstanding leadership in the advancement of independent higher education in the state of Wisconsin through support of student financial policies to promote educational diversity and freedom of choice; and
Whereas, he discussed politics with Harry Truman while riding the train through Wisconsin and brought presidential candidate John F. Kennedy to speak to his class; and
Whereas, Jerry met his wife, Nelda Seer, in Milwaukee, at a National Young Democratic Convention; and
Whereas, the Madisons have 2 children, Mark and Elliott, as well as a granddaughter, Madeline; and
Whereas, Jerry and Nelda are known to a legion of young political activists as teachers, advisers, mentors and friends; and
Whereas, Jerry Madison is famous as a storyteller, joke maker and trivia master; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature recognize Jerry Madison for his many accomplishments and salute him for his contributions to the Democratic Party of Wisconsin, the 7th Congressional District and the state of Wisconsin and wish him a long, healthy and enjoyable retirement; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint resolution to Jerry Madison.
