ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: commemorating the achievements and contributions of the University of Wisconsin on the occasion of its sesquicentennial.
Whereas, on July 26, 1848, our state founders had the foresight to establish, as the 4th act of the new state legislature "an institution of learning under the name and style of the University of Wisconsin"; and
Whereas, from a first class of 17 students on February 5, 1849, the University of Wisconsin-Madison today enrolls more than 40,000 students annually; and
Whereas, the University of Wisconsin-Madison is considered to be one of the most respected public universities in the world, consistently ranking among the best in terms of undergraduate academics, research and development and public service; and
Whereas, the University of Wisconsin System was created on October 11, 1971, combining the University of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin state universities, under a single Board of Regents; and
Whereas, the University of Wisconsin System constitutes a valuable and treasured resource for our state, providing higher educational opportunities to more than 150,000 undergraduate and graduate students statewide, as well as providing valuable assistance through University of Wisconsin-Extension offices in all 72 counties; and
Whereas, in 1904 university leaders defined a tradition known as the "Wisconsin Idea", a living doctrine that continues today, in which the services and resources of the university are shared with the citizens of Wisconsin; and
Whereas, continuing education at the University of Wisconsin System provides valuable educational opportunities for people throughout Wisconsin, serving more than 280,000 adults and precollege youth for both personal growth and enrichment, and for professional development; and
Whereas, in its 150th year, the University of Wisconsin continues to serve as a catalyst for creative relationships and partnerships with schools, government, businesses and individuals across the state and nation and around the world; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature hereby thank and commend the University of Wisconsin for its achievements and contributions to the state of Wisconsin.
