1999 Senate Joint Resolution 15
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Laurie Carlson.
Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson began his life of making the world a better place on January 12, 1908, in Bayfield, Wisconsin; and
Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson attended the Northland College, where he was a member of the varsity basketball team and graduated from University of Wisconsin (UW); and
Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson was a founder of the Progressive Party of Wisconsin in 1934 and was elected to the Wisconsin state assembly in 1936 where he served 3 terms, as well as serving 4 terms as clerk of courts for Dane County from 1968-76; and
Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson was committed to the principles of the Progressive Movement and to the needs of the less fortunate in our society; and
Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson was an avid promoter of the winter sport of curling, founding the U.S. Curling Foundation and serving as its first vice president from 1956-60; and
Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson was an avid sports lover, supporting football and basketball at UW-Madison and acted as a liaison between the athletic department and the legislature during his 3 terms in the assembly; and
Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson entertained many people over his 91 years with his piano music; and
Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson founded a number of successful businesses and encouraged the efforts of others to become private entrepreneurs; and
Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson's love of community involvement manifested in his charter membership in the Madison Pen & Mike Club, the Madison Press Club, the Elks Club, Masonic Lodge, Zor Shrine, Wisconsin Teacher Union, Musicians Union, Kiwanis Club, Madison Club, and the First Baptist Church of Madison; and
Whereas, Laurie E. Carlson was deeply committed to his wife Helen and their family, and was particularly proud of his 4 children — Maya, Jay, Laurene and Geraldine — and their accomplishments in life; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin legislature does hereby commend the life and exemplary public service of Laurie E. Carlson, and extend its sympathies to his children and their families; and, be it further
Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to each of Mr. Carlson's children.
