1999 Senate Joint Resolution 39
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: commending and congratulating Chancellor David Ward for his contribution to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the state of Wisconsin.
Whereas, on January 1, 2001, David Ward will step down as the University of Wisconsin-Madison chancellor; and
Whereas, David Ward will have served the faculty, staff and students of the university, as well as the citizens of this state, as chancellor since June 1993, the longest tenure of any current leader of a Big 10 university; and
Whereas, he has devoted nearly 40 years of service to the University of Wisconsin-Madison; and
Whereas, under David Ward's leadership, the university has substantially improved undergraduate education through improved advising, stronger core curriculum, and expanded research opportunities for students; and
Whereas, he created and implemented the university's innovative interdisciplinary teaching and research initiative, known as the "cluster hiring program", which will bring 150 new faculty to the campus by 2003; and
Whereas, he spearheaded the successful public-private partnerships between the state of Wisconsin and the university's alumni and donors for the campus' capital budgets, which have resulted in 57 construction projects on campus for research and instruction, including new buildings such as the Kohl Center, the Biotechnology Center, and the Pharmacy and Chemistry buildings; and
Whereas, he created a similar partnership for the operating budget, the Madison Initiative, a $97,000,000 investment that will enable University of Wisconsin-Madison to continue to provide students an outstanding education and to help Wisconsin maintain its competitiveness in the global economy; and
Whereas, during his tenure, the university raised $740,000,000 in private funds, placing the University of Wisconsin-Madison number 1 in private support among public universities; and
Whereas, he created the Technology Transfer Council to help promote and steer the commercial potential of the University of Wisconsin-Madison research discoveries; and
Whereas, he shepherded the rapid growth of the nationally recognized University Research Park, which houses 68 companies that collectively employ more than 2,600 people; and
Whereas, he has reinvigorated the "Wisconsin Idea" by renewing the university's commitment to sharing the resources of the university with the state and the nation; and
Whereas, during his tenure, the football team won back-to-back Rose Bowls, an unprecedented feat in the Big 10, and other men's and women's athletic teams have enjoyed unparalleled success; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin legislature commends and congratulates Chancellor David Ward for his contribution to the University of Wisconsin-Madison and to the state of Wisconsin; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Chancellor Ward.
