1999 Senate Joint Resolution 7
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: commemorating the achievements and contributions of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America on the occasion of its centennial.
Whereas, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America traces its roots back to 1899, when veterans of the Spanish-American War banded together and formed organizations, that would become what is known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America, to help fellow veterans secure pension rights and other benefits for those who served their country; and
Whereas, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America was officially incorporated in the District of Columbia in 1914 and by Congressional Charter on May 28, 1936; and
Whereas, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of the great state of Wisconsin called to order its first organizational meeting on June 6, 1921, and has since provided dedicated service to Wisconsin veterans, their families and our communities; and
Whereas, today the 2,000,000 members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America continue its proud heritage by providing assistance to veterans and their families in obtaining entitlements and benefits, advocating legislation on behalf of veterans and serving the needs of our country; and
Whereas, service projects of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America community contribute more than 14,000,000 hours of volunteer service each year to benefit veterans hospitals, youth programs, patriotic endeavors, environmental efforts, safety instruction and thousands of local community activities, and provide more than $2,700,000 in college scholarships, awards and other incentives to high school students across the nation; and
Whereas, today the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America is the nation's oldest major veterans organization and continues to fulfill the commitment adopted by its founders in 1899: "Honor the Dead By Helping the Living"; and
Whereas, the members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America are individuals blessed with uncommon courage, integrity, valor and honor, who made a personal commitment to our country; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature salute the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America for 100 years of service to our country, to the comrades of the veterans and to their families, and to our communities; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this joint resolution to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of the great state of Wisconsin.
