2001 Senate Joint Resolution 42
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Jane Pettit.
Whereas, Jane Pettit passed away on September 10, 2001, after a courageous, year-long battle against lung cancer; and
Whereas, although Jane Pettit has passed, her remarkable life, courageous spirit, and philanthropic generosity will be an inspiration for the entire state of Wisconsin for generations to come; and
Whereas, the Pettit name has become synonymous with compassion and kindness thanks to years of charitable acts by Jane Pettit; and
Whereas, Jane Pettit's generosity and greatness can be seen when reviewing her extraordinary legacy; and
Whereas, Jane Pettit endowed a floor at the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in 1987; and
Whereas, Jane Pettit's generosity led to the construction and opening of the Bradley Center in Milwaukee in 1988; and
Whereas, Jane Pettit provided funding for the neonatal care unit at St. Joseph's Hospital in 1991; and
Whereas, Jane Pettit's donation to the Pettit National Ice Center in West Allis has provided the United States olympic speed skating team with a world renowned training facility, and has given residents of the Milwaukee area a first class skating facility available for public use; and
Whereas, Jane Pettit made numerous donations to the Milwaukee Arts Museum, including the purchase of several paintings by internationally acclaimed artist Georgia O'Keefe in 1997, and contributions to the building campaign that assisted in the construction of the museum's recently opened Calatrava addition; and
Whereas, Jane Pettit's ongoing support for the Great Circus Parade helped keep this Wisconsin tradition a success; and
Whereas, Jane Pettit became a part owner of the Milwaukee Brewers in 1999, continuing a tradition of local ownership of Wisconsin's major league baseball team; and
Whereas, Jane Pettit in the year 2000 supported Alverno College, Mount Mary College, Messmer High School, the Schlitz Audubon Center, Boerner Botanical Gardens, the proposed African American World Cultural Center, and the Wisconsin AIDS fund; and
Whereas, Jane Pettit's donation of $20,000,000 led to the construction of the Lynde and Harry Bradley School of Technology and Trade in Milwaukee; and
Whereas, Jane Pettit devoted her life to philanthropy, the arts, and improving the quality of life in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin; and
Whereas, Jane Pettit's generosity leaves a long and proud legacy that will not be forgotten by those whose lives she has touched; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend Jane Pettit for her philanthropy, her generosity towards the arts, and her efforts to improve the quality of life in Milwaukee and throughout Wisconsin; express their sorrow at her death; and extend condolences to her family and friends; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Jane Pettit's daughter, Lynde, and son, David Jr.
