2003 Senate Joint Resolution 3
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and public service of Carl W. Thompson.
Whereas, Carl W. Thompson was born on March 15, 1914, in Washington, D.C., and died on September 19, 2002, in Stoughton, Wisconsin; and
Whereas, he graduated from Stoughton High School in 1932; and
Whereas, he earned a B.S. degree in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1936, an LL.B degree in 1939, and a J.D. degree in 1966; and
Whereas, Mr. Thompson married Marian L. Foster on October 3, 1942; and
Whereas, he served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II in military intelligence from 1942 to 1946; and
Whereas, following his discharge from the U.S. Army, Mr. Thompson established a law practice in Stoughton; and
Whereas, he began his government career as an alderman on the Stoughton City Council; and
Whereas, Mr. Thompson ran as a Democratic candidate for governor in 1948 and 1950; and
Whereas, he was a presidential elector in 1948 and served as Democratic national committeeman from 1949 to 1956; and
Whereas, Mr. Thompson was first elected to the Wisconsin assembly in 1952, and served in the 1953 to 1957 sessions; and
Whereas, he was subsequently elected to the Wisconsin senate in 1959 to fill the unexpired term of Gaylord Nelson, and served until 1984; and
Whereas, during his tenure in the legislature, Mr. Thompson was known for his dedication to human rights and civil liberties; and
Whereas, Mr. Thompson retired from the Wisconsin legislature in 1984, after having served 32 years; and
Whereas, after his retirement, Mr. Thompson served as a commissioner on the Labor and Industry Review Commission for 6 years; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature commend the devoted public service that Carl W. Thompson contributed to this state and his community, express their sorrow at his death, and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Mr. Thompson's wife, Marian; his daughters, Jane Thompson-Melby of Champaign, Illinois, Anne Thompson of Pardeeville, Margaret Thompson of Denver, Colorado, and Costa Rica, and Lisa Thompson-Eagan of Stoughton; and his sisters, Ruth Curtiss of Darlington and Helen Ratchford of Corvallis, Oregon.
