ENGROSSED RESOLUTION
Relating to: honoring the life and public service of Lewis T. Mittness, Jr.
Whereas, Lewis T. Mittness, Jr., was born in La Crosse on July 29, 1929; and
Whereas, Mr. Mittness graduated from Tomah High School in 1945; and
Whereas, Mr. Mittness attended UW-La Crosse before serving in the Army of the United States of America from 1951 to 1953; and
Whereas, after his service in Korea, Mr. Mittness completed a bachelor of science degree in secondary education at UW-Stevens Point in 1954; and
Whereas, Mr. Mittness married his wife, Ruth Ann, in Stevens Point on June 12, 1954; and
Whereas, Mr. Mittness earned a master of education degree in school administration from UW-Madison in 1959; and
Whereas, Mr. Mittness was deeply moved and called to public service by the assassination of President John F. Kennedy; and
Whereas, Mr. Mittness was first elected to the Wisconsin assembly in 1964 and served in the 1965 to 1975 sessions; and
Whereas, Mr. Mittness served on numerous committees during his tenure in the legislature, most notably serving as the chair of the Assembly Natural Resources Committee from 1971 to 1975; and
Whereas, Mr. Mittness resigned from the state assembly in December of 1975 to be appointed as Executive Secretary to the Wisconsin Public Service Commission, where he served from 1975 to 1980; and
Whereas, Mr. Mittness served as the assembly sergeant at arms from 1981 to 1984; and
Whereas, Mr. Mittness was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, the National Education Association, the Wisconsin Education Association Council, and the Janesville Education Association; and
Whereas, Mr. Mittness passed away in Janesville on May 27, 2006, at the age of 76; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, That the members of the Wisconsin state assembly commend the devoted public service that Lewis T. Mittness, Jr., contributed to this state and his community, express their sorrow at his death, and extend their condolences to his family and friends; and be it further
Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint resolution to Mr. Mittness's wife, Ruth Ann Mittness; his children, Sharon Huber and Lori Smiskol; his grandchildren, Nicole, Shane, and Josh; and his brother, Doral Mittness.
