2005 Senate Joint Resolution 27
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs 60 Years of Service to Veterans.
Whereas, soon after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Wisconsin began planning for the return to civilian life of all men and women who were to serve in the armed forces; and
Whereas, not knowing how long the war would last but that one day those who served would come home and that its people would be prepared to extend every possible assistance to restore them to their proper place in a grateful and peaceful society; and
Whereas, in 1943, Wisconsin legislation created the Veterans' Recognition Board to provide medical, hospital, education, and economic aid to returning Wisconsin veterans of World War II and their dependents; and
Whereas, during the 1945 legislative session that department and several other state departments concerned with veterans affairs were integrated into a single department-the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs-combining into one department the powers, duties, and functions previously assigned to the separate agencies; and
Whereas, during the 1945 legislative session a law enacted made it mandatory for each county board to appoint a county veterans service officer; and
Whereas, similar to the period during and immediately following the Second World War, the State of Wisconsin has seen fit to provide assistance to all returning veterans and families, with the current initiative entitled "Mission: Welcome Home," a program to reintegrate our Wisconsin Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom veterans back to Wisconsin; and
Whereas, over the past 60 years, under seven Secretaries of Veterans Affairs, the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs has not wavered in its support to Wisconsin veterans, from World War II to the present, and has continued to maintain the most comprehensive array of state veterans benefits of any state, while also working to ensure Wisconsin veterans learn about and receive the benefits and services they have rightfully earned; now therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs is congratulated on its 60 years of service to Wisconsin veterans; and, be it further
Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this joint resolution to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.
