2007 Assembly Joint Resolution 119
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: recognizing May as Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention month.
Whereas, most people do not realize that the skin is the largest and most visible organ of the body and performs many essential tasks; and
Whereas, more than 1 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year; and
Whereas, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer during his or her lifetime; and
Whereas, this year, there will be about 116,500 new cases of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer; and
Whereas, melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults between the ages of 25 and 29 and the second most common form of cancer for adolescents and young adults between the ages of 15 and 29; and
Whereas, more than 75 percent of all skin cancer deaths are from melanoma, and one person dies almost every hour from melanoma; and
Whereas, melanoma and other skin cancers, if detected early, are highly treatable; and
Whereas, the American Academy of Dermatology's Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month is a public education campaign designed to promote the prevention and early detection of melanoma and other skin cancers through its See Spot...Check Spot...Save a Life campaign; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the Wisconsin legislature formally recognizes May as Melanoma and Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month in Wisconsin; and, be it further
Resolved, That the legislature formally recognizes the work and success of the Wisconsin Dermatological Society in educating the citizens of Wisconsin on how to spot the warning signs of skin cancer through both skin self-examinations and free skin cancer screenings offered by dermatologists.
