ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: proclaiming an annual Wisconsin Water Skiing Appreciation Week.
Whereas, water skiing was invented by Ralph Samuelson in Minnesota in 1922; and
Whereas, water sports have become increasingly popular in Wisconsin with water ski enthusiasts taking advantage of Wisconsin's abundance of lakes and natural waterways; and
Whereas, recreational, club, and competitive water skiing offers unique opportunities for residents and tourists alike to enjoy the natural resources throughout Wisconsin while participating in a healthy and exciting activity; and
Whereas, Thompson "Tommy" Bartlett, a Milwaukee native, helped to bring the enthusiasm of water skiing thrill shows to the Wisconsin Dells and established Tommy Bartlett's Thrill show as an annual tourist destination and showcase of water skiing talent; and
Whereas, the Wisconsin State Water Ski Show Tournament is the world's largest water ski show tournament and is held annually beginning on the third Thursday of July; and
Whereas, this tournament features numerous team and individual competitions and has contributed greatly to the increased involvement and success of water skiing; and
Whereas, encouraging participation in water skiing and other water sports is vital to ensuring the continued enjoyment of this sport and the protection and appreciation of our natural resources; and
Whereas, despite the international growth and interest in water skiing, Wisconsin remains one of the premier water skiing destinations in the world; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature encourages the participation and recognition of water skiing in Wisconsin; and, be it further
Resolved, That the week preceding the third Thursday of July each year be designated as Wisconsin Water Skiing Appreciation Week.
