ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and military service of Sergeant Daniel James Thompson.
Whereas, Sergeant Daniel James Thompson was born August 20, 1984, in Portage, Wisconsin, the son of Bob and Lisa Thompson, and died February 24, 2009, from an improvised explosive device while on active duty in the Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan; and
Whereas, Daniel graduated from Portage High School in 2003 and joined the Wisconsin Army National Guard in his junior year to fight in service of his country; and
Whereas, Daniel served with distinction during his time in the Wisconsin National Guard, U.S. Army Reserve, and while on active duty with the U.S. Army; and
Whereas, Daniel was a member of the Individual Ready Reserve and deployed to Afghanistan with the 715th Military Police Company based in Melbourne, Florida; and
Whereas, Daniel attended MATC in Portage to earn his degree in criminal justice and law enforcement and hoped to enter the police force upon completion of his military service; and
Whereas, Sergeant Thompson posthumously received the Combat Action Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star Medal in recognition of his heroism in service; and
Whereas, Sergeant Thompson was known by family and friends as an honest and loyal person, and an ambitious and hard-working citizen, who touched the lives of many people in his community; and
Whereas, Daniel is survived by his parents, Lisa and Bob Thompson of Portage and his fiancée, Maria Steinke, whom he loved with all of his heart; and
Whereas, Daniel was laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery in Packwaukee, Wisconsin, on March 4, 2009; and
Whereas, Sergeant Thompson faithfully served the people and the state of Wisconsin and the United States of America and made the ultimate sacrifice for his country to protect our freedom and way of life, while advancing the blessings of liberty and democracy to the Afghani people; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin state legislature hereby commend Daniel James Thompson for his exemplary life, express their sorrow at his death, and extend sincere condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues; and, be it further
Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this resolution to Daniel's parents, Bob and Lisa Thompson, and to his fiancée, Maria Steinke.
