ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life and military service of Private First Class Steven Drees.
Whereas, Private First Class Steven Drees was born on May 26, 1990, to Paul Drees and Dawn Bayer, and died on June 28, 2009, as a result of combat-related wounds suffered on June 24, 2009, while honorably serving his country in Afghanistan; and
Whereas, Private First Class Steven Drees was a 2008 graduate of Peshtigo High School and enlisted in the United States Army National Guard prior to graduation; and
Whereas, Private First Class Steven Drees served with distinction in the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, United States Army, when he was assigned to serve a one-year tour in Afghanistan; and
Whereas, Private First Class Steven Drees was the gunner on a Humvee in Konar Province on June 24, 2009, when his unit was ambushed; and
Whereas, Private First Class Steven Drees was wounded during the attack, but continued to defend his unit ensuring no other soldiers were wounded and compelling one of his unit to state, “No one else was hurt and it's because of Drees that no one else got hurt. He did his job and he did it well. He kept us safe. He is a hero to all of us."; and
Whereas, Private First Class Steven Drees was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with “V" device to denote valor, the Purple Heart Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Overseas Service Bar, and the Expert Weapons Qualification Badge; and
Whereas, Private First Class Steven Drees' family and fellow citizens are very proud of him and know that he died honorably serving the nation; and
Whereas, Private First Class Steven Drees embodied the Army's core values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage and he is sorely missed; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature of the state of Wisconsin commemorates the remarkable life of United States Army Private First Class Steven Drees and extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues; and
Be it further resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall transmit a copy of this joint resolution to his parents, Paul Drees and Dawn Bayer.
