2009 Senate Joint Resolution 70
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: recognizing Aquaculture Day.
Whereas, aquaculture, also known as fish farming, is an important agricultural industry in Wisconsin, dating back to 1856, having a sound environmental history using sustainable best management practices; and
Whereas, Wisconsin has 2,314 registered fish farms, 1,984 private farms with ponds, 125 business farms, 213 public fee fishing farms, 6 wholesale fish processing farms, and 95 farms processing fish for human consumption; and
Whereas, aquaculture has sales of $14.1 million in fish and minnows, which is ranked first in the Midwest; and
Whereas, aquaculture contributes $21 million to Wisconsin's economy, and commercial farm operations provide 441 jobs; and
Whereas, 90 percent of 1.4 million anglers in Wisconsin use live bait and fish farms provide locally grown live bait and fish for stocking; and
Whereas, Wisconsin fish farms provide safe, locally grown food which is high in valuable nutrients such as Omega-3, which is recommended by the American Heart Association; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That in recognition of the aquaculture industry in Wisconsin, the members of the Wisconsin legislature do hereby proclaim July 17, 2010, and every third Saturday of July thereafter, to be Aquaculture Day in Wisconsin and urge all citizens to recognize the importance of this industry.
