ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: honoring the career and public service of United States Senator Herbert H. Kohl.
Whereas, former United States Senator Herb Kohl was born on February 7, 1935, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and has made Milwaukee his home through the present day; and
Whereas, following his graduation from Washington High School in Milwaukee, Herb Kohl graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1956 with a degree of Bachelor of Arts, and from Harvard University in 1958 with a degree of Master of Business Administration; and
Whereas, Herb Kohl served honorably in the United States Army Reserve from 1958 to 1964; and
Whereas, Herb Kohl and his family built a successful chain of grocery and department stores "the Wisconsin way," through hard work, entrepreneurial skills, and friendly customer service that today serves as an example of good business nationwide; and
Whereas, Herb Kohl served as the chairman of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin from 1975 to 1977; and
Whereas, Herb Kohl purchased the Milwaukee Bucks in 1985 and has retained ownership to the present day while working tirelessly for professional basketball in Wisconsin and for its employees and fans; and
Whereas, Herb Kohl served with distinction as a Democratic senator from the state of Wisconsin for 24 years from January 3, 1989, to January 3, 2013; and
Whereas, Herb Kohl, as a United States senator, demonstrated true leadership and was an unwavering advocate for the citizens of Wisconsin. Among many examples, Senator Kohl worked to promote and advance Wisconsin's agricultural community, benefits for our nation's senior citizens, and the education and future of our children; and
Whereas, the Herb Kohl Educational Foundation, established in 1990, as of August 31, 2012, has provided approximately $8.2 million in scholarships and fellowships to students, educators, and schools; and
Whereas, Herb Kohl has served the state of Wisconsin with honor, compassion, and integrity; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin state legislature hereby commend the exemplary career and public service of United States Senator Herb Kohl, wish him happiness in his retirement from public life, and thank him for being "Nobody's Senator but Ours."
