2013 Assembly Joint Resolution 97
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: the life of Gordon Lyle Hinkley.
Whereas, Gordon Lyle Hinkley, the "Granddaddy of Milwaukee Radio," was born on November 25, 1925, in Port Edwards, Wisconsin, and began his career by winning a talent competition sponsored by WFHR Wisconsin Rapids in 1941, for which he was offered his own Sunday piano show; and
Whereas, Gordon Hinkley served three honorable years in the United States military in Europe, which included announcing for the Armed Services Radio Network, before working for WSAU Radio in Wausau, Wisconsin; and
Whereas, Gordon Hinkley joined WTMJ as a morning announcer in 1950 and hosted a number of popular shows, including "Gordon Hinkley's Wisconsin Weekend" and "Invitation to Beauty," as well as, in 1961, creating and hosting "Ask Your Neighbor," which ran for more than 30 years; and
Whereas, Gordon Hinkley was inducted into the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 1992 and was inducted into the national Radio Hall of Fame in 1997, earning the recognition of nearly six thousand radio executives and members of the Museum of Broadcast Communications; and
Whereas, Gordon Hinkley loved radio, and was universally beloved by his listeners and fellow broadcasters for being not only professional and courteous, but also a warm, humble, and kind person; and
Whereas, Gordon Hinkley died on December 23, 2013, at the age of 88, and is survived by his high school sweetheart, Joyce Berryman, whom he married in 1943, as well as his three children, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the legislature commends the life of Gordon Lyle Hinkley for his dedicated radio service, which enriched the city of Milwaukee, the state of Wisconsin, and the United States; and, be it further
Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint resolution to Gordon Hinkley's wife, Joyce, each of his three children, and WTMJ of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
