2013 Senate Joint Resolution 40
ENROLLED JOINT RESOLUTION
Relating to: commending Colonel Curtis Lee Brown, USAF (Retired), for being inducted into the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame.
Whereas, Colonel Curtis Lee Brown of Hudson, Wisconsin, was inducted into the prestigious United States Astronaut Hall of Fame on April 20, 2013; and
Whereas, Colonel Brown's induction into the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame took place during the 2013 United States Astronaut Hall of Fame Induction Gala at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida; and
Whereas, Colonel Brown was a career astronaut from August 1987 to May 2000, during which time he was a member of six space shuttle missions; and
Whereas, Colonel Brown set the NASA record for the most space flights in the least amount of time by going on six space shuttle missions in the span of seven years; and
Whereas, Colonel Brown also has the record for being the first aviator to have six flights in the shuttle program and the record for being at the highest altitude any shuttle has ever been in orbit; and
Whereas, Colonel Brown was the commander of Space Shuttle Discovery when it made its famous space flight in 1998, which took former astronaut and United States Senator John Glenn back up to orbit on STS-95; and
Whereas, Colonel Brown has experienced the humbling sight of viewing Earth from space and describes looking down at a beautiful, calm, and peaceful blue and white planet where borders separating countries are indistinguishable and problems seem insignificant; and
Whereas, Colonel Brown was born and raised in North Carolina and now resides in Hudson, Wisconsin, with his wife, Mary; and
Whereas, prior to his career as an astronaut, Colonel Brown attended the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and
Whereas, Colonel Brown's passion in life has been flying, and in his spare time, he enjoys flying his World War II T-6 Texan model airplane, doing flyovers for veterans' events, and racing airplanes at the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada; and
Whereas, Colonel Brown continues to enjoy flying by working as a pilot for Sun Country Airlines; and
Whereas, Colonel Brown generously provides merit-based scholarships in his hometown in North Carolina to students pursuing post-secondary educational fields of technical study; and
Whereas, Colonel Brown's accomplishments as an astronaut have been an inspiration to others; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the senate, the assembly concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature do hereby commend and congratulate astronaut Curtis Lee Brown for being inducted into the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame and wish him continued success.
