AB672,1,2 An Act to renumber and amend 457.08 (1) (b); and to create 457.08 (1) (b) 2. of the statutes; relating to: education requirements for social workers.

Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau

Under current law, no person may use the title "social worker" unless the person is certified as a social worker by the examining board of social workers, marriage and family therapists and professional counselors (examining board). To be certified as a social worker by the examining board, a person must meet certain education and examination requirements. To meet the education requirement, a person must submit evidence satisfactory to the examining board that he or she has received either: 1) a bachelor's or master's degree in social work from a program accredited by, or a preaccreditation program of, the council on social work education; or 2) a doctorate degree in social work. To meet the examination requirement, the person must pass an examination approved by the examining board to determine the person's minimum competence to practice as a social worker.

This bill provides that a person may meet the education requirement for certification as a social worker by submitting evidence satisfactory to the examining board that he or she has received at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a human service discipline.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:

AB672, s. 1 Section 1. 457.08 (1) (b) of the statutes is renumbered 457.08 (1) (b) (intro.) and amended to read:

AB672,2,2 457.08 (1) (b) (intro.) Submits evidence satisfactory to the social worker section that he or she has received done one or more of the following:

AB672,2,5 1. Received a bachelor's or master's degree in social work from a program accredited by, or a preaccreditation program of, the council on social work education or a doctorate degree in social work.

AB672, s. 2 Section 2. 457.08 (1) (b) 2. of the statutes is created to read:

AB672,2,8 457.08 (1) (b) 2. Received at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a human service discipline.
