AB749,1,2 1An Act to create 174.046 (10) of the statutes; relating to: the destruction of dogs
2that have contagious diseases or are suffering.
Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
Under current law, if a stray dog has been in the custody of a humane officer,
law enforcement officer or pound for more than 7 days without being claimed by the
owner, the officer or pound may release the dog to a person other than the owner or
destroy the dog. Under this bill, a humane officer, law enforcement officer or pound
to whom a dog is delivered may, with the approval of a veterinarian, destroy the dog
sooner than 7 days after receiving the dog if the dog has a contagious disease or is
suffering.
The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
AB749, s. 1 3Section 1. 174.046 (10) of the statutes is created to read:
AB749,1,74 174.046 (10) Diseased or injured dog. Notwithstanding sub. (9), the officer or
5pound to whom a dog is delivered may, with the approval of a veterinarian, destroy
6the dog in a proper and humane manner sooner than 7 days after receiving the dog
7if the dog has a contagious disease or is suffering.
