AB89,1,3 An Act to amend 36.11 (16); and to create 38.12 (12) of the statutes; relating to: commencement of the fall semester at the University of Wisconsin System and technical colleges

Under current law, fall semester classes at the University of Wisconsin (UW) may not begin until after September 1.

This bill provides that, beginning in 1996, fall semester classes at the UW may not begin until after Labor Day. The bill directs the UW board of regents to establish a procedure that enables students to register for the fall semester prior to the beginning of September.

The bill also directs technical college district boards to ensure that no technical college commences the fall semester until after Labor Day.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do enact as follows:

AB89, s. 1 Section 1. 36.11 (16) of the statutes is amended to read:

AB89,2,2 36.11 (16) Commencement of fall semester. The board shall ensure that no fall semester classes at any center or institution within the system, except medical school classes and 4th year classes at the school of veterinary medicine, commence until after September 1 Labor Day. The board shall establish a procedure that will enable students to register for the fall semester prior to the beginning of September.

AB89, s. 2 Section 2. 38.12 (12) of the statutes is created to read:

AB89,2,5 38.12 (12) Commencement of fall semester. The district board shall ensure that no district school commences its fall semester until after Labor Day.

AB89, s. 3 Section 3. Initial applicability.

AB89,2,8 (1)  This act first applies to registration for and commencement of the fall semester at the University of Wisconsin System and technical colleges in 1996.
