Analysis by the Legislative Reference Bureau
The Wisconsin Institute of Family Medicine currently operates a summer
externship program for students who have completed their first year at the
University of Wisconsin (UW) Medical School or the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Each student in the program spends 8 weeks working with a family physician.
Beginning in the 1996-97 academic year, this bill directs the department of
administration (DOA) annually to pay to the institute an amount equal to the
amount raised by the institute for the program from other sources in the previous
fiscal year, not exceeding $100,000, for the purpose of increasing the number of
students enrolled in the UW Medical School and Medical College of Wisconsin who
are able to participate in the program. The bill appropriates a sum sufficient for that
purpose.
For further information see the state fiscal estimate, which will be printed as
an appendix to this bill.
