AJR18,1,1 1Relating to: the service to the Assembly of Thomas T. Melvin.
AJR18,1,32 Whereas, The Honorable Thomas T. Melvin, Chief Clerk of the Wisconsin State
3Assembly, has been a dedicated employe of the Assembly since January 13, 1965; and
AJR18,1,64 Whereas, Tom has faithfully discharged his responsibilities as Chief Clerk of
5the Wisconsin State Assembly, being first elected to that position in January 1987;
6and
AJR18,1,97 Whereas, Tom began his legislative career as an assistant records clerk and
8became the assistant chief clerk in 1967, serving in that position for 20 years, under
98 chief clerks; and
AJR18,1,1110 Whereas, Mr. Melvin has dedicated his adult life to public service and in
11particular service to the legislative branch of Wisconsin government; and
AJR18,1,1612 Whereas, Tom's deep devotion to his duties, his strong belief in the democratic
13process and his desire to give of himself to assist those in need led him to be
14recognized nationally by his colleagues on 2 separate occasions, as he was appointed
15to serve on the executive committee of the American Society of Legislative Clerks and
16Secretaries; and

1Whereas, during the past 30 years, Tom Melvin has assisted 429 members of
2the Assembly in helping them make the transition to elected public office and tutored
3them on the operations of the legislature; and
AJR18,2,84 Whereas, his guidance and assistance have played a major role in 2 former
5members of the Assembly being elected Governor, one being elected Lieutenant
6Governor, 11 being elected as Representatives to the U.S. Congress, one being elected
7State Treasurer, one being elected Mayor of the City of Milwaukee and countless
8others being elected to higher public office; and
AJR18,2,119 Whereas, Thomas T. Melvin has chosen to retire from public service on January
1031, 1995, and to begin a new life of leisure, enjoying the benefits of a Wisconsin society
11he has played a role in enhancing over the past 30 years; and
AJR18,2,1412 Whereas, Tom will be missed by the members of the Assembly and by his
13colleagues and by the general public that he served so well and by legislators who
14relied on him for guidance and information; now, therefore, be it
AJR18,2,18 15Resolved by the assembly, the Senate concurring, That: the members of
16the Legislature of the State of Wisconsin congratulate Thomas T. Melvin on his 30
17years of service, commend him on his distinguished career and wish him the best of
18everything upon his retirement.
