AJR25,1,2 1Relating to: requesting Congress to suspend the requirement that reformulated
2gasoline be sold in Southeastern Wisconsin.
AJR25,1,73 Whereas, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has received 900
4telephone calls and the federal Environmental Protection Agency has received 2,000
5calls from state residents complaining that reformulated gasoline may be causing
6illness among motorists in Southeastern Wisconsin, with symptoms including
7headaches, dizziness, rashes and nausea; and
AJR25,1,108 Whereas, hundreds of motorists have reported that reformulated gasoline has
9caused a marked reduction in the performance of their automobiles, including
10damage to small and other engines and fuel mileage decreases of up to 25%; and
AJR25,1,1311 Whereas, the use of reformulated gasoline may cause damage to fuel pumps,
12which has prompted an investigation by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture,
13Trade and Consumer Protection; and
AJR25,1,1714 Whereas, the price increase for reformulated gasoline over regular gasoline is
15as much as 14 cents per gallon, leading to investigations by Attorney General James
16Doyle and also by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer
17Protection; and

1Whereas, according to press reports, intervention and intense lobbying by the
2petroleum industry and by oxygenated fuels producers caused EPA to reverse its
3decision and to reject Wisconsin's recent request for temporary suspension of the use
4of reformulated gasoline; now, therefore, be it
AJR25,2,11 5Resolved by the assembly, the Senate concurring, That the members of the
6Wisconsin Legislature urge Congress to take prompt action that would give
7Southeastern Wisconsin effective relief from the requirement to use reformulated
8gasoline through the various legislative proposals introduced by Congressmen
9Kleczka, Barrett, Petri, Neuman and Sensenbrenner and U.S. Senator Feingold that
10would suspend either temporarily or permanently the use of reformulated gasoline;
11and, be it further
AJR25,2,13 12Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint
13resolution to each member of this state's congressional delegation.
