AJR44,1,2 Relating to: requesting the U.S. Postal Service to issue a stamp commemorating Richard Bong.

AJR44,1,4 Whereas, Richard Bong was one of the most illustrious residents of northern Wisconsin, having been born in Superior and educated in Poplar and Superior; and

AJR44,1,5 Whereas, Richard Bong was a leading American hero during World War II; and

AJR44,1,7 Whereas, he demonstrated his military skill and courage by shooting down 40 enemy planes in combat in the Pacific theater of operations; and

AJR44,1,10 Whereas, he demonstrated even greater valor and dedication by volunteering for combat while assigned to duty as an instructor, during that time destroying 12 of his total of 40 enemy planes; and

AJR44,1,14 Whereas, for his intrepid exploits Major Bong received 26 decorations, including the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross, the Silver Star with clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross with clusters, the Air Medal with clusters and the Australian Flying Cross; and

AJR44,1,16 Whereas, he died tragically during 1945 in a crash of a new aircraft he was testing; and

AJR44,2,2 Whereas, Richard Bong's service to his country deserves to be remembered and permanently memorialized; now, therefore, be it

AJR44,2,5 Resolved by the assembly, the Senate concurring, That the members of the Wisconsin legislature request the U.S. Postal Service to issue a stamp commemorating Richard Bong; and, be it further

AJR44,2,7 Resolved, That the assembly chief clerk shall provide a copy of this joint resolution to the Postmaster General.
