AJR47,1,53 Whereas, during 1848 the Wisconsin territorial legislature granted a charter
4to Chester Matson, one of the earlier settlers at Merrimac, to operate a ferry across
5the Wisconsin River; and
AJR47,1,76 Whereas, during 1974 the ferry was registered in the National Register of
7Historic Places; and
AJR47,1,98 Whereas, the Merrimac Ferry is one of the 5 ferries operating in this state,
9although at one time more than 500 were in operation; and
AJR47,1,1010 Whereas, the Merrimac Ferry is the only free ferry in the Midwest; and
AJR47,1,1211 Whereas, the ferry is an example of a kind of transportation that is historically
12significant and rare; and
AJR47,1,1413 Whereas, each year thousands of persons enjoy a leisurely and beautiful ride
14on the ferry across this state's most significant river; now, therefore, be it
AJR47,1,16 15Resolved by the assembly, the Senate concurring, That the Wisconsin
16legislature designates the Merrimac Ferry an official sesquicentennial landmark.
