AJR58,1,53 Whereas, on September 28, 1995, Gaylord Nelson will be one of 12 persons who
4will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, this nation's highest civilian honor;
5and
AJR58,1,76 Whereas, Mr. Nelson served in the Wisconsin legislature, was governor of
7Wisconsin and represented Wisconsin in the U.S. senate; and
AJR58,1,108 Whereas, in 1970 he founded Earth Day, which alerted millions of persons in
9this country that protecting the environment was urgent business that required
10their constant vigilance and best efforts; and
AJR58,1,1311 Whereas, he also was the author of the Environmental Education Act, was
12named Conservationist of the Year, received the Environmental Leadership Award
13and is now counselor to the Wilderness Society; and
AJR58,1,1514 Whereas, this preeminent champion of the environment is receiving
15recognition of the highest order for his achievements; now, therefore, be it
AJR58,2,3 16Resolved by the assembly, the Senate concurring, That the members of the
17legislature of the state of Wisconsin congratulate Gaylord Nelson on his great honor,

1receipt of the Presidential Medal of Freedom; salute him for his work for the
2environment and his other achievements; and urge him to continue his efforts; an,
