AJR77,1,32 Whereas, water is said to be the lifeblood of the nation and therefore a critical
3component of the environment; and
AJR77,1,64 Whereas, water and water-related environments provide for outstandingly
5remarkable scenic, recreational, fish and wildlife resources of enormous social and
6economic value; and
AJR77,1,87 Whereas, water-oriented recreational activities are the most popular of all
8recreational activities; and
AJR77,1,109 Whereas, the U.S. Congress has enacted legislation relating to water that
10declares it to be national policy to do all of the following:
AJR77,1,1211 (1) Assure that all Americans have safe, healthful, productive, and
12aesthetically and culturally pleasing surroundings.
AJR77,1,1613 (2) Restore and maintain the integrity of the nation's rivers, lakes, streams and
14other watercourses by working with public and private entities to encourage and
15promote programs and activities for the prevention, reduction or elimination of
16pollution in all waters; and

1Whereas, it is important for all Americans to accept responsibility for keeping
2the nation's waters and surrounding areas safe, clean and visually pleasing for
3current and future generations; and
AJR77,2,64 Whereas, there are local efforts underway, supported by national organizations
5and federal agencies, to conduct river clean-up activities in the majority of the states;
6now, therefore, be it
AJR77,2,11 7Resolved by the assembly, the senate concurring, That the week of May 11
8to 18, 1996, is proclaimed "River Cleanup Week" in the state of Wisconsin and that
9the governor of the state of Wisconsin is requested to issue a proclamation calling
10upon the citizens of Wisconsin to observe this week with appropriate ceremonies and
11clean-up activities.
