SB260,1,2 1An Act to create 84.1041 of the statutes; relating to: marking a certain bridge
2as the "Major Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge".

This bill directs the department of transportation (DOT) to mark the bridge
across Lake Superior on USH 2 between the city of Superior in Douglas County and
Duluth, Minnesota, as the "Major Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge" in recognition
and appreciation of the many military accomplishments of Major Richard I. Bong
during World War II. Born in the city of Superior, Major Bong received 26
decorations, including the Congressional Medal of Honor, for his military exploits
and is widely known as Amercia's greatest war ace. The bill directs DOT to erect a
permanent granite monument to commemorate the marking of the memorial bridge.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
SB260, s. 1 3Section 1. 84.1041 of the statutes is created to read:
SB260,2,2 484.1041 Major Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge. (1) The department
5shall, subject to sub. (2), mark the bridge across Lake Superior on USH 2 between
6the city of Superior in Douglas County and the city of Duluth in the state of
7Minnesota as the "Major Richard I. Bong Memorial Bridge" in recognition and
8appreciation of the many military accomplishments of Major Richard I. Bong during

1World War II, including being awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1944
2and being widely known as America's greatest war ace.
SB260,2,12 3(2) Upon receipt of sufficient contributions from interested parties to cover the
4cost of erecting a sign on the end of the bridge in this state to clearly identify to
5motorists the marking of the bridge under this section, the department shall erect
6the sign. In cooperation with the applicable local municipalities and upon receipt of
7sufficient contributions from interested parties, the department shall erect and
8maintain a permanent granite monument in close proximity to the bridge. The
9department shall design the permanent granite monument after consultation with
10the descendants of Major Bong. No state funds, other than from the receipt of
11contributions under this subsection, may be expended for the erection or
12maintenance of the monument or sign.
