SB319,1,2 1An Act to amend 118.33 (1) (a) 1. of the statutes; relating to: the physical
2education high school graduation requirement.

Current law prohibits a school board from granting a high school diploma
unless the pupil earns, in grades 9 to 12, at least 1.5 credits of physical education.
Administrative rules promulgated by the department of public instruction specify
that one credit is equivalent to one year of instruction and that participation in
physical education is required in each grade from 9 to 12 except that one year is
optional. In addition, participation in interscholastic athletics may not be
substituted for physical education.
This bill authorizes a school board to grant physical education credit to any
pupil in grades 9 to 12 who is participating in interscholastic athletics, but not
exceeding 0.5 credit in each school year.

The people of the state of Wisconsin, represented in senate and assembly, do
enact as follows:
